Lake Sammamish Residence

The new landscape is organized into three zones – formal closest to the house, transitional on the mid-slope, while native plantings hold the slope closest to the lake. A series of four flat patio spaces were created so that the owners can enjoy entertaining in their backyard. Fifty-two granite steps lead down to the lake, ensuring a safe and comfortable path. The deck was raised one foot for a more spacious feel below. A white ceiling helps to bounce light into the space and interior of the home. Fifty-two granite steps wind gently uphill connecting the lakefront and new patios with the home. This bluestone patio, midway down the slope, is a great place to take in the view. A permit would be required to rebuild these walls, so they were painted and capped instead for a neater appearance. The boathouse was painted to match the residence. When looking out from the deck, the water is not the only pleasing view — the new yard creates a tapestry of colors an textures to enjoy. Bluestone and granite combine as a cohesive palette in the yard and draw the eye to the organic shape of the pathway. The fireplace has glass on two sides to maintain the view from inside the outdoor room and is clad in a natural stone veneer. With a grill, side-burner, and ample storage — this is a place to cook outdoors in any weather.

This steeply sloped backyard was unusable except as a rough pathway down to the lake. Planting and paving styles were haphazard and treacherous. Spaces were dark and cramped. In response, the yard was terraced to create a series of patio spaces. Wherever possible, light was let in – by removing particular trees, lifting the deck to meet the finish floor of the upstairs level, and using bright, reflective colors. Plants were organized from formal near the house, to native by the water. The end result is a highly cohesive and usable waterfront property.
