This yard was originally dominated by an old, outdated swimming pool. The Phase One objective of the redesign was to create a park-like setting for this young family to enjoy. The concrete pool and deck were removed and in their place a spacious lawn, play area and border planting were created. Achieving the right balance of planting space and lawn was critical. A new fence surrounds the space and plantings were designed to frame (not obscure) the views out to Lake Washington and Mount Rainier.A small bluestone patio creates a vantage from which the adults and their guests can watch the kids play. Vegetable gardens and plants with edible fruit were worked into the overall design. A large concrete wall was successfully softened by a composition of containers with jasmine and calla lilies. Phase 2 will include an updated upper level patio with views out over the lake and beyond.
